Dearest Joanna,

I am so happy that Fran was able to see Barack Obama become President, the most hopeful and dramatic sign yet of the great turning of our society. And I am so glad that you and he have shared and continue to share a love, lives, companionship and meaningful work for so many years.

I can't quite remember how Fran danced with Death during the exercise you led us through at the intensive, so I don't know just how he greeted that "old friend." But I do remember that while it was a bit scary at first, it was joyous and comforting and freeing in the end.

The edge of spring is certainly the ultimate moment of the yearly turning of nature, so I can't help but feel that Fran picked his time just right. Looking at my Aldo Leopold Wisconsin phenology calendar I see that today is the day when lynx kits are being born and Canada geese start laying eggs... and I wonder what adventure he's off on now.
