How often do we meet someone whom we feel privileged to have known—and that feeling still fresh forty years on?

Fran and Joanna stand out in my memory as the Peace Corps’ finest.  But it isn’t Fran’s managerial talent that I’m remembering.  The Macys hosted us India 8’ers many times at their home, Fran always extending a warm hand.  Every one of us felt his personal concern, the strength he injected into us, his broad vision that encompassed and swept up each one of us.  These are encounters that stay with you for a lifetime.

My sincere condolences to Joanna and all the family.  You can be proud to have shared and stood behind such a great man.  And to Joanna, my warm thanks for your part in sharing Fran’s concern and vision for us Peace Corps volunteers in those years.
